GM Alexander Santos on the Seattle Riot bench - he coached the S35 Riot to a 20-8-2 record, losing in the playoffs to the Dragons in 7

Seattle, WA

The past week for the Seattle has been… hectic to say the least, and the management in Seattle has alot of questions to answer. Why did they sell the team off? They managed to ship the likes of Trevor Wilson, Micheal McFadden, Viatcheslav Orlov, Kyle Kylrad, Cory Knouse and Jonathan Lundberg, and along with that, rumors of Kian Hamilton also on the move have been floating around. But why declare a rebuild? We contacted the Seattle Co-GM Alexander Santos, hired just a week ago, about the situation in Seattle.

http://i5.ifrm.com/14976/177/emo/reporter.gif Why did this all start?
Alexander Santos: “It all starts from the first trades. Cory Knouse, Jonathan Lundberg and Kyle Kylrad being shipped were moves that needed to happen, and it’s not cause we simply dislike. They each carried a strong flight risk, and we’re likely to leave the Riot in the offseason. Losing them for nothing would have been an incredible shame and would put us in a really bad position… our older management left us with no SEA 1sts until S42. With the likes of Knouse, Lundberg and Kylrad headed off, we would be stuck with a crazy hole of talent, and no picks to try and find that talent back. Luckily for us we we’re able to find a new home for each of the three players with flight risk in Seattle, and managed to get an impressive amount of futures, along with Chris Smulander and Roddy Hawkins.”

The Riot did also move Viatcheslav Orlov with Cory Knouse, but for the three players that they felt we’re departing in Free Agency in a few weeks, they managed to acquire 5 seconds and a first, along with Smulander… which looks like something you’d be looking for at a start of a rebuild.

“Think what you want about the return we got, but it sure as hell is much better than the potential nothing we we’re going to get by letting these players leave in FA”
“The hardest part was dealing with what do do with Trevor Wilson and Micheal McFadden. Both we’re peaking very soon, and staying in Seattle would waste their careers away I feel with the path we’ve taken after moving Knouse, Kylrad and Lundberg. We weren’t willing to move Wilson until we got an offer that was just phenomenal, and West Kendall was able to give me that. With McFadden, it didn’t make sense for us to keep a goalie whos in search of a cup… we want to give him a chance at a cup and we believe that Edmonton can get him that”

http://i5.ifrm.com/14976/177/emo/reporter.gif Even with these three stars going out… why couldn’t Seattle acquire players to fill in their spots?
Santos: “Like I said earlier, as I came into management, we had no firsts owned by Seattle until S42… what would we use to go out and acquire some stars? A couple 2nds won’t do the trick for us to keep up with teams like Winnipeg when we’re dealing with heavy losses from the free agent risk players. Trying to stay competitive was simply not possible.”

http://i5.ifrm.com/14976/177/emo/reporter.gif Alright… I’m sure you’ve seen the #FreeDizzy chants from around the league in response to the Riot declaring a rebuild… will we be seeing Garret in a jersey that isn’t the Riot?

Santos: “Signs point to no. We want to build this franchise around the young Louie Garret, he’s going to be the most key piece of this rebuild, along with the youngsters we’ve got here in Zajac, Zybnek and Twain. It's gonna take a hell of an offer to pry Garret out of Seattle.”

S40 1st http://i47.tinypic.com/8x07c6.png
S41 2nd http://i47.tinypic.com/8x07c6.png

The Blizzard did manage to sign Knouse to a two-season deal, with an AAV of 8.5 million, so they we’re able to lock him up. This trade really puts the Blizzard into a spot where they can seriously be considered as contenders in the upcoming seasons. Cory Knouse is recoginzed as a phenomenal top 6 two-way forward who will have a massive impact on scoring for the Blizzard this season, and Orlov improves the Blizzard defense alot, as he is considered a great top 4 defenseman.

The Riot commence their rebuild here, by acquiring the 17th overall pick, surely a good player, along with a first next seasons and a 2nd in the following season. Along with that, they acquired what could be a star in Chris Smulander, and a depth defenseman in Roddy Hawkins. These are good steps for the Riot rebuild, they acquired good future along with a decent young player in Smulander. Maybe they could have done better, however this is much better then potentially losing Cory Knouse for nothing in free agency.

ckroyal92 i love you i hope you do good in edmonton, glad i was able to play with you in the big leagues aswell as juniors

S41 WPG 2nd*

The Jets did sign Kylrad to a 5 million x 3 season deal, so they we’re able to lock up a great forward goal scorer to add to what is already an incredible offensive core in Winnipeg. Bah god are they gonna be deadly.

The Riot add more future to the rebuild, by acquiring the 25th (or 26th someone update the tracker) and a future 2nd. If they can make good with those picks, this trade can look great from both the Riot and Jets perspective, however we don’t have a way of telling who wins this yet. Again, it’s better then losing Kylrad for nothing in free agency

Kylrad you’ve been great for seattle, jfc Hamilton-Kylrad-Lloren was the craziest thing ever.

Hardest thing I think I’ll ever do is trade Wilson

The Platoon got a fucking star in Trevor Wilson. He’s bound to fill in the spot that Volkova left behind and probably launch the Platoon into a playoff position, after a very dissapointing season. They did give up alot of futures, but it’s worth it

The Riot get a promising prospect in Inari Twain, who will hopefully become a top 6 forward for the future Riot, a great add for the rebuild. Along with that, they acquire an early 2nd in a deep draft, and fill in their future with two future firsts. Good for the rebuild for the Riot, but we won’t see how well this turns out for the Riot until we see what those picks become.

twils ily, thanks for everything in Seattle, and being so loyal to us.

Rights to Jonathan Lundberg
http://i50.tinypic.com/16gwwf9.png Trades:
MIN S41 2nd

The Chiefs we’re able to extend Lundberg, so they made out huge and now add a real playmaker for winger Terrance Nova.

The Riot get a future 2nd, which may not be much, but at the same time there wasn’t much on the table for the Riot, and moving his rights for a 2nd was much better then losing him to FA.

Rich you’re great

Michael McFadden

The Blizzard acquire legendary Riot goalie Michael McFadden, in search of a cup, and with his addition just further supports the Blizzard being real contenders for the coming seasons, as they’ve finnaly got a great goaltender.

The Riot acquire a decent 1A goalie in Rudnikova to replace McFadden, who also has a history with the Riot. Along with that, they acquire a future first and a potential top 2/top 4 defenseman.
Abdeezy you’ve been great for seattle, i wanna see you win that cup.

GM Santos is open for questions
